Welcome to the 2010 AKA Region 8 Kite events calendar! If you see any mistakes on this calendar, or if you know of other events that need to be added to this calendar, please e-mail the webmaster at: TKOGunn@webtv.net.

Always contact the kite event coordinators before traveling to any event, because event dates can change, or events can be canceled on short notice for various reasons.

Feb. 6--Sugarland Cultural Kite Fest

The city of Sugarland, Sw of Houston with the assistance of the SHARK kite club is holding the first soon to be annual Cultural kite fest. The event will include a mini Kite Museum featuring various kites from around the world. The SHARK members will host free Parachute races and demo flying during the day. Numerous large show kites will also be flown with the expectation to publicly show several new designs for the first time in the this part of the country. Entertainment on the main stage will be scheduled throught the day and vendors will offer food and drinks along with Kites being available for purchase.

The Sugarland Memorial park is at 15300 University Blvd. Driving South on US-59 from Houston you exit at University Blvd on the west side of town and continue on the service road to the traffic light. Turn left under the freeway and you will find the park a short distance off the Freeway at the end of the street.


Feb.- 28th Annual N.W. Recreation Center kite workshop

Richard Robertson said that this event is postponed and may end up being canceled for good, unless another location can be found, because the N.W. Recreation Center is closing at the end of February 2010 for extensive remodeling, and will take a year to complete. Last year's event may have been the last kite workshop.

The Shark Kite Club is Proud to assist the Ft Bend County Child Welfare Board with the Family Kite Festival. The event raises awareness of the 322 child abuse cases that were handled by local CPS office in 2009. This represents a reduction from 402 cases in 2008 reported at last years festival.

Directions: US Hwy 59 South From Houston to Rosenberg, exiting at Hwy 36 ( Lowes Hardware). 1 Mile south across from the fairgrounds. The location is several miles South of Sugarland which is part of the large Houston Metro area. Numerous hotels are located in this area along with the Richmond Rosenburg area.

This will be a fun fly, there will be a car show in the same park just east of here both days about 150 + cars, this is a long standing successful show......The part of the park we will be using has a lot of land we can expand to if need be. We will be just north of the museum complex containing the National Rt 66 Museum, The Old Town Museum and the Farm and Ranch Museum and Blacksmith Shop......The Park has a new carousel with beautiful wooden horses, a train ride, miniature golf course and a swimming pool. A lot of people will be attending these places so there will be a lot of people seeing our kites.......a number of motel/hotels are available at a wide range of cost and I can help locate what you would want based on cost and facilities.......the host hotel will be the Clarion Hotel (formerly the Holliday Inn) phone: 580 225 6637...It is one of the finest dome hotels in the country and has a free full breakfast to order from the menu.

This festival will benefit the Down Syndrome Association of San Antonio. The Coastal Bend Sky Pirates cordially invite all kite fliers to join us in this endeavor. The main purpose is for the families of Downs kids to get a day just to enjoy the beach, sky, winds, kites, kayaks, food and fun on the water. Rockport Beach is easy to find next to Downtown Heritage District and the Harbor-- (there is a per car daily parking permit required- or $10 annual pass). We will be mid-way down the beach just past the first pavilion.
